When did you get into wetsuit repair?
I started in ’89. just when neon was starting to go out. We've come from over-locked seams to the flat stitch to stretchy rubber in some parts, then stretchy rubber in a lot more parts, and then there's the all-stretch suit. Those can be a pain in the neck. Everything has to be exactly right. Sometimes the newer suits are so fitted that certain places wear out quick er - like in the armpits, where you have three panels coming together
What are some of the most interesting repairs you've done?
I've had a lot of dog bites. The owner's dog has gotten mad because they didn't take it to the beach, so when they came home the pooch decided to put big holes in it. I've had rat bites if it's been in the garage. Somebody just brought in fishing waders and asked me to add beer coolies on somehow. I've dealt with a lot of injured people who've asked me to put extra neoprene into their suit so that when they lay down it doesn't hurt them. Aside from repairs, I do customizing with knee braces and booties. I've had more than a couple people bring in their suits with fresh blood on them. There are a lot of crazy things that go on. i've also had a number of men come in here who need the crotch of their suit let out a little bit because let's just say it was a little too tight for them
A few companies have begun experimenting with more eco-friendly rubber in their suits. In the meantime, is there any way to recycle old wetsuits?
Absolutely Suits have a second life. Some people don't realize you can do such a thing, but I cut a lot of arms off, as well as convert full suits to short-arm fulls, and sometimes I'll take the legs and arms oft to make a spring suit. Now they have a suit for the summer and they can get a new one for the winter
As somebody who's seen it all, what can people do to prolong the life of their suit?
The sun is the worst. I've seen so much sun damage, it's just terrible. The newer rubber dries out faster than the older rubber. A lot of times you can't see where the hole is because it's in between the nylon, but then if you hold up to the light you can see the hole. My advice is to just keep an eye on your suit. If it's a warranty thing you can get it into warranty quicker, not letting it go to the point of no return, which some people do. Then I have to give them the bad news, just like a doctor
